Bespoke Event Catering: A Fire-Cooked Scottish Feast at Midhope Castle

Inside An Outlander-Inspired Dining Experience in Scotland’s Heartlands

Some events are about the setting. Others are about the food. This one brought together an extraordinary location, exceptional local produce, and a shared love of Scotland to create an evening that guests won't soon forget.

Hosted at Midhope Castle – instantly recognisable to Outlander fans as Lallybroch – this bespoke event catering experience combined exclusive private access to one of Scotland's most iconic filming locations with a communal dining experience celebrating Scottish food, fire, and hospitality.

The menu was created by chefs Alex of Green Gannet and Pete from FieldFireFork, whose collaborative approach showcased Scotland's exceptional larder through dishes inspired by open-fire cooking and traditional hospitality.

The Evening

The evening began with private access to the castle and grounds, allowing guests exclusive access to the historic site, long after the daytime visitors had left.

Welcomed with a signature Sassenach Spirit cocktail and a selection of Scottish-inspired canapés, guests wandered through the courtyard, explored the castle with knowledgeable guides, and discovered more about both the history of Midhope Castle and its role in the Outlander series.

Thoughtful details helped immerse guests in the atmosphere, from cocktails inspired by Sam Heughan's The Cocktail Diaries to the opportunity to dress in historically inspired costumes for photographs against the backdrop of the castle.

As dusk settled, the experience moved to the estate's atmospheric barn, where dinner was served banquet-style down long communal tables that encouraged conversation, connection, and sharing.

Here, guests gathered to enjoy a generous Scottish sharing feast that celebrated seasonal ingredients and the simple pleasure of bringing people together around good food.

The Food

At the heart of the evening was a menu designed to celebrate Scotland's rich culinary heritage through fire cooking, seasonal produce, and generous hospitality. Every dish showcased exceptional local ingredients, elevated by subtle smoke, thoughtful flavour pairings, and a shared passion for cooking over flame.

The evening began with a selection of Scottish-inspired canapés, setting the tone for the feast to come. Guests enjoyed flavours such as haggis bonbons, Cullen skink tartlets, and fire-roasted beef with whipped crowdie and horseradish cream; a thoughtful introduction to a menu rooted in Scotland's traditional larder.

The main feast celebrated some of Scotland's finest ingredients, from whisky-cured and hot-smoked salmon to smoked Chicken Balmoral and reverse-seared Scottish venison cooked over hot coals. Served alongside seasonal vegetables, barbecue potatoes, and dishes inspired by the changing seasons, the menu showcased the depth and versatility of Scottish produce.

To finish, guests enjoyed a modern take on a classic Scottish cranachan, combining The Sassenach whisky, heather honey, smoke-roasted oats, raspberries, and cream. More than simply a meal, the feast reflected the spirit of the evening, bringing people together around exceptional food, open-fire cooking, and the warmth of shared hospitality.

The Result

The result was an intimate event that celebrated everything that makes Scotland special: remarkable settings, outstanding local produce, passionate people, and the stories that bring them all together. From exploring the historic halls of Midhope Castle to enjoying dishes inspired by Scotland's landscapes and larder, every element worked together to create an evening that felt authentic, immersive, and distinctly Scottish.
